We\'ve just posted a good technical article titled, \"Integrating Tomcat with Apache Via the mod_jk Module.\" A few years ago this would have been a \"Linux only\" piece, but this excellent tutorial by Chad Thompson was written for Mac OS X, and is featured on our Mac DevCenter.Things have changed, haven\'t they? True, Linux continues to dominate on the server side of the equation (and deserves to because it has proven itself admirably). But on the desktop, Mac OS X is scratching an itch for those who\'ve been waiting for a real client-side Unix that also supports lots of popular applications.

This article will describe the deployment process and the subsequent automatic update of the client\'s GUI with the help of the Java Web Start technology in a Windows environment. At present, Java Web Start may be used in Windows, Linux, Unix (Solaris), and not so long ago in Macintosh OS X. As for applications deployment, HTTP protocol is used; this makes it possible to use any of the many HTTP servers. To use all the possibilities that the Java Web Start technology provides, such as \"versioning\" of Java applications and \"incremental updates,\" it\'s necessary to a Web server that supports Servlets or CGI scripts.

The question was recently raised as to why we choose to work with Windows NT technologies on some projects, rather than one of the various *NIXs (e.g., Linux or one of the various flavors of Unix). Security and reliability are among a few of the well-known concerns about using an NT-based platform. Consequently, I drafted this document to address some of these issues and to document some of the advantages of going with NT.

With the recent release of PHP 4.3, Macintosh users can now configure and build PHP themselves. This is a great boon. Finally, Mac OS X users have the same level of PHP support that people who run Linux and Windows enjoy.If you wanted to use earlier versions of PHP on Mac OS X, you either needed to run the pre-compiled module provided by Apple or download a special, hand-built version made by helpful users.

If you\'re a fan of PHP then you may have PHP installed on an Apache web server using MySQL as the backend on a Windows or Linux machine. Most people will develop and test their code on a Windows machine until they move it into a production machine. In this article I am going to step you through installing PHP under IIS (Internet Information Server) on Windows 2000 . We will then look at using Microsoft Access as the backend database to create a discussion forum.
