Adding Records to an Open Database in Windows CE
Well, after all, what would a database be without some data? It\'s time to think about adding records. Before we dig into the specifics of this task, there are a few clarifications we need to make about the relationship between CE database properties, CE database records, and the overall structure of the CE database. (In the discussion that follows, I use the terms \"database property\" and \"field\" interchangeably; they are equivalent.)

    Pocket PC and Windows Smartphone
Microsoft\'s Mobile Devices division, one of seven Microsoft business units, has developed the Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition, and Windows Powered Smartphone OSs. These platforms, based on the Windows CE OS, specifically target small-form-factor devices. The OSs are licensed to the OEM, which builds the hardware and produces the final devices. Many OEMs have signed up to build devices based on Mobile Devices OSs.

Using Database Engines in a Mobile Application
There is no need to note that, with database functionality, application logic becomes much simplier. And, a programmer\'s life-I don\'t even have to mention how that\'s simplified.... Windows CE has its own database support, but its usage is a bit complicated. It isn\'t overly complicated, but it\'s complicated enough enough from my point of view to choose flat binary files instead of inviting all this headache.

    Mastering XML under Windows CE
To tell you the truth, I\'m not an expert in XML at all. And before Pocket PC 2002, I did not need to be. But, these days are gone, and now Microsoft delivers a powerful XML parser as part of its mobile platforms. Still, it is not as state-of-the-art as the desktop one, but it has became useful enough. So, now you, as a programmer, may consider using XML as a storage layer for your application. XML today is a wide area, hardly coverable in one article.

How to Port Your Win32 Code to Windows CE
One winter day in 1986, while working in a federal research program in Alaska, drinking a cup of coffee and reading the latest issue of Dr. Dobbs, I learned of a technology that seemed to hold out the promise of solving a lot of problems for my colleagues. According to Dr Dobbs Editor Jon Erickson, Microsoft\'s Windows 1.0 was going to do great things for IBM PC users. \"Hock the Volvo\" he admonished, \"and buy the Windows SDK right now!\".

Understanding Windows CE Telephone API (TAPI)
ATAPI Overview Telephone API gives to programmer a control over manipulating calls over various telephonic hardware. It can be an intertnal modem, GSM, and so forth. TAPI provides a powerful mechanism for operating on those devices and hides all low-level details from the application developer. You no longer need to work with AT commands. TAPI will translate all required items calling to the telephone service and provides through a Telephone Service.

Programming Windows CE Shell User Interface Elements
One of the key tasks of adapting Win32 code to the CE shell is learning how to make applications and documents visible to the user. In the SysMenuGadgets example below, you\'ll see how to add shortcuts to the HPC and HPC Pro desktop and how to add programs and documents to the Start menu. Figure 1 - The SysMenuGadgets Example Running on an HPC 2000 Platform Click here for larger image You can see the full source code for the SysMenuGadgets program in code files linked.

Creating Applications for the Pocket PC
As devices such as the Pocket PC become almost as powerful as the machines sitting on our desks, it makes sense that more and more developers will want to start creating applications directly targeted at such platforms. In the old days, however, this was pretty difficult. You had eMbedded Visual Basic, which allowed you to create Windows CE applications, but programming inconsistencies and sticky development techniques didn\'t make for an easy ride.

    Using the Windows CE Registry
From an application developers\' point of view, the Registry is the place where application-specific state information is stored between executions. Predictably, the Windows CE Registry is a leaner version of its desktop cousin. This means that you may want to re-evaluate the kind and amount of data your application stores in the Registry. The most convenient way to become familiar with the structure of the CE Registry is with the Windows CE.
