A lot of people confuse listening with hearing. The truth is, the two are very distinct. Most of us can hear, but not all of us are effective when it comes to listening. Listening is a skill that has to be developed over time. Below, we will review some of the questions that every student should ask himself or herself at some point when attending a class. This helps them become better listeners – and more successful in life outside the classroom.

While it is a fact that N-Tier applications tend to provide almost limitless scalability, the desire to change or add new forms of functionality can present a challenge in more than one arena. Growth on a large scale can make capacity planning quite hard. When available resources have been exhausted by applications, then there must be some sort of provision made to borrow resources in order to support unexpected workloads. This is where manageability becomes key.

There are essentially three types of careful listening that you will want to follow. They are paraphrasing, open questioning, and feeling reflection. The first of these, paraphrasing, is mainly just re-stating what someone has said in your own words. To use an example, someone might say something along the lines of, “I can’t believe he just quit his job. What a mistake he has made!” In response, you might say, “So you seem to think he quitting his job was a bad idea.” This is an example of paraphrasing. You have just clarified something that the speaker has said.

You might recall that several years ago on TV there was a public service announcement that talked about the importance of listening skills. The PSA differentiated between hearing, which is merely a physical ability, and listening, which is actually a skill. By being able to listen, we are able to effectively make sense of what another person is saying.

How am I Doing in Life? Every once in a while, it is necessary to take a step back in order to take a long, hard look at where we are in our lives. At this point, it is good to ask yourself a bunch of critical questions. Are you at the point in your career where you want to be? Have you so far accomplished all of your goals in life? If so, then maybe it is time to make goals that stretch yourself a bit more. If you have not accomplished your goals in life, then perhaps you have made the mistake of setting too many goals or trying to accomplish them at an unnaturally fast pace.
